There's a lot of variability out there, and this is by no means an exhaustive list, but this should give you a good selection of reference tones for your instrument to compare everything else to. Ibanez Tube Screamer (or suitable clone like the Electroharmonix East River Drive) this doesn't mean you should buy them, but playing around with a few of these will help you anchor yourself in what to look for and will give you a healthy reference for comparing others: If you're new to fuzzes and drive pedals, I'll recommend a few you should at least try. Tl dr: unless you're literally trying to cover those tracks exactly as recorded, your pickups are probably fine.Ĭool. You can get close with some creative use of electronics, and getting creative with the electronics is how new and interesting things happen. I'm a proponent of playing instruments that inspire you so if the duo-sonic inspires you with the single-coils and you wanna do crunchy stuff anyway, I say go for it. This is where things start to get really noisy with single-coil pickups but is also where you start to get really neat bizzare things happening. Don't be afraid to stack drives or fuzzes to get what you're looking for either. Different instruments have different "flavors" that they bring, but unless you want to imitate those two tones exactly, I agree with /u/thepensivepoet that you should focus your efforts on getting a couple of good fuzz/overdrive effects. The truth is that with the right complement of electronics you can get close with either setup. I've owned HH and SSS guitars and used both. Double coils would help with noise reduction but if you get a dark fuzz, I imagine you can get close tone-wise. But listening to the pity sex track, it sounds really fuzzy on an otherwise clean background. This is probably more a personal preference than any real problem. I haven't played the duo-sonics but I imagine your greatest struggle is going to be less about tone and more about mitigating amp hiss. Did you get one of the HS duo-sonics or two single-coils? If it's an HS model you're probably set on pickups, if it's SS you probably have only a little more to worry about.
